Kevin Harvick Aiming For Phoenix Three-Peat
2006 PIR sweep nice, but new season is in gear

There's no question that Kevin Harvick was the face of NASCAR at Phoenix International Raceway in 2006. As if his sweep of the NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events on the one-mile oval in April wasn't enough, Harvick returned to PIR in November to sweep the track's NEXTEL Cup slate. Only one driver - November Busch Series winner Matt Kenseth - kept the Bakersfield, California native from a 4-for-4 sweep. Now a winner of the Daytona 500 and carrying a new sponsor and a bright new paint scheme, Harvick's PIR slate is again blank. Long stored away are his 2006 trophies, but the driver's focus has not changed. With the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™ at PIR looming under bright lights on Saturday, April 21, Harvick is ready to take his third straight win on the one-mile oval. "Phoenix has been good to us over the years," Harvick said. "We won both Cup races last year. We won a Busch race and finished second in the other. Phoenix is one of those places I grew up racing on and I have a long history there. I have been fortunate to have had a lot of success there and look forward to going back." Of all of the drivers to have competed in each of NASCAR's three premier series on the one-mile oval, Harvick is the only one with wins across the board. His three wins at PIR last season as well as wins in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2002 and 2003 undoubtedly make him one of PIR's top NASCAR drivers of all time.

If the driver of the No. 29 Shell Pennzoil Chevrolet is able to win his third consecutive race at PIR, he'll become not only the first driver in PIR's 20-year NEXTEL Cup Series history with three wins, but he'll also become the first driver in any NASCAR series at PIR to win three in a row since Jack Sprague took three straight Craftsman Truck Series victories in 1996 and 1997. The Car of Tomorrow, in its first true aerodynamic test, should play a role in the 31-year-old's quest. "It will be a lot different setup wise than Martinsville or Bristol," said Harvick of the Car of Tomorrow. "Jeff (Burton) went out there to do the tire test (in January) and he said it drove better than the car he raced there last year. I think people are making a bigger deal of it than they have to. "Obviously, we will have some kinks to work out but I think that is the responsibility of the drivers and the teams to make the cars better and in the end, it is safety first. That is where we started." Bright Lights. Big Party. NASCAR at Night! NASCAR action heats up when the lights come on for the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™ Weekend at PIR, April 19-21, 2007. The party kicks off under the lights for Thursday's AlphaTrade.com 150 NASCAR Grand National Division West Series race. Friday night's fiesta is the Bashas' Supermarkets 200 NASCAR Busch Series race. Then, the action reaches its pinnacle when the cars and stars of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series take the track for the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™, the first night race of the 2007 NEXTEL Cup Season.
